#cancelled is a card game with a goal of becoming the most followed social media influencer or getting all of your opponents cancelled.
As this was a game theme design project, I took the existing game mechanics of Lovecraft Letter and centered them around a new theme, character illustrations, and game pieces.
Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, and After Effects. 2020.
The Challenge
Take a set of rules to a card game and reimagine the theming and game set pieces. Create a promotional video for the game.
Logo Ideation
I decided to keep it simple with the intention of having some flexibility to vary the hashtag icon. I used Freight Sans because it is a font used by Instagram.
Character Designs & Other Illustrations
My illustration style is based in social media trends such as creating a personal brand, curating a visually cohesive feed, and making sure everything looks aesthetically pleasing and perfected.
Rulebook
Explains what getting cancelled means in this context, introduces the game's premise, walks the player through the gameplay, and gives the player more information on the cards.
Player Boards
Created to make a space for the influencer characters to be introduced and includes space for certain game functions. Verification Tokens included to designate when a player becomes verified.
Cards
Designed as "posts" to discard on the player's social media account board. Gives context to the characters through personalized illustrations. Because a player has to be verified to play a High Profile Post card, they are designated by Verification Stars and yellow text.
Leader Board
A space for players to track rounds won by placing Win Tokens on the board.
Cheat Sheet
Made so players can see what cards are in the deck and plan their strategy accordingly.
Packaging
Informative and intriguing with insights into the characters and calls to action ("be a travel blogger") on each side. Age range, play time, and number of players stated on the top of the box and a short game description on the bottom.
Promotional Video
By using all of the final game pieces and animating game characters in their card scenes, I showcased the theme, character personalities, and a bit of the gameplay into this promotional type of video.
